Favourite Takeaways anyone?...

Some of my favourite takeways like The Daily Rice and Avebury Avenue Fish and Chip shop have already been mentioned on Tonbridge Blog over the years but what are yours? Let's hear what the best are in Tonbridge. Are they charging too much or is it about right. How often can we afford them? Are they healthy or should we make the effort to cook every day so we know what we're eating? Are so called free deliveries really free if these food businesses give you a discount to collect or is this just a clever ruse? When you can easily spend £50 on a family curry or Chinese carry out isn't this stretching the budget too far? Nothing like putting businesses in the spotlight to improve services and quality!...

One of the last review you did was of the ASK restaurant and look what happened to that!
You could try a take away from its replacement the Turkish Uskudar. It looks like its also from the ASK stable but if the food is cooked on site and the staff pay attention to detail then it may do ok.

As a family, we use the Avebury Avenue Fish and Chip Shop when we fancy a fish supper, plus Tasty Palace Chinese Take-away, on the corner of Priory Road and St Stephen's Street when we want a chinky.

If a curry is the order of the day, then Happy Cuisine, also in Avebury Avenue, is our usual choice, although we have used the one on Station Approach, whose name escapes me.

For a kebab, you can't beat Kebab Express on Quarry Hill Parade, in fact my son and I had one tonight whilst Mrs B, was over at the Assembly Hall. watching the Counterfeit Stones.

We probably have a take-away of some description once a week and, contrary to what some would have us believe, they can be quite healthy. The chicken shish kebab I had tonight, certainly was, being low fat, and served up with plenty of fresh salad.

Paul, I hope you have checked the hygiene standards of these establishments on scores on the doors tonbridge.
One is rated very good (5), 1 good (4), 2 are satisfactory (3) and 1 needs improvements (2).

There are quite a few below standard (2) places in or near the high street and a real ale pub not million miles from some of Paul's favourites that is well below standard with a rating of 1.

I haven't done so yet manofkent, but then I don't pay too much attention to such things, believing that "the proof of the pudding is in the eating".

The food may taste ok but taking a risk on getting food poisoning is not my cup off tea but if you do get it then any suspected case of food poisoning from eating takeaway or restaurant food should be reported to your local Environmental Health

This is a lovely idea, something most of us probably have in common.

Are you going to be writing some comments on the proposed Sainsbury's Town-Takeover?

manofkent, I've tried searching on both the link you posted, plus the FSA (Food Scares Agency)website that now coordinates this information. No results found for either Happy Cuisine or Kebab Express. Avebury Avenue Fish and Chip Shop and Tasty Palace come out alright though, as does the Humphrey Bean.

Coralie, good comment. How about renaming the Borough, "Tonbridge and Sainsbury's Borough Council. The non democratic centre of Kent? Have you seen the Here and Now paper delivered this week? Sainsbury's not just enlarged, but moved to a new site, Saisbury's fuel station moved to a new site, Angel Lane, disappears! Beals, as we know gone, five measly non food shop premises (dear dear, we can't has any competition for Sainsbury's)! Sickening innit!

I think one of the original announcements was that there would be no reduction in parking spaces...
The plans in Here and Now seem to suggest otherwise given the petrol station is being moved to a new site, sainsburys and the cinema have larger footprint than existing angel centre/beales/sainsbury site and the 5 non-food shops seem to be sited where the petrol station is now. The 'new' angel centre is also going to be sited on the Bradford Street carpark.
So, plans put forward to bring more people to town and number of parking spaces reduced....

Paul, to find Express Kebaba put in, takeaways, tn9 and you will see Baran Express Kebabs. For Happy Cuisine, put in Restaurant/Cafe/Canteen, tn9 and rating of 2.

In case you want to know Brett and before the numbers disappear there are 66 spaces in the Bradford street car park, 197 in the High street side of the Angel centre and 397 to the rear. 660 in total. My main concern is if the car spaces remain the same what happens when the cinema is open during retailing hours?, especially if a parking discount if offered to compete with the cinema in Tunbridge Wells with its free parking.
As a bench mark the Tunbridge wells cinema with its 9 screens hold 1700 people. How many car loads is that? So how many of the Tonbridge spaces will be occupied with cinema goers?

Whether the proposed development will just take 5 retailers from the High street and will the lack of a department store have a detrimental affect on visitor numbers is another matter.
Long term all the indications are that towns need less shops not more. No doubt TMBC will produce the evidence that countrywide trends don't apply to Tonbridge.

Mainly, don't trust TMBC. (Soon to be TSBC). See the new flagstones promised for the Castle Watergate entrance, they look remarkably like concrete blocks to me!

A prediction! Straight from my trusted crystal ball! IF we get a cinema! IF I said! The crystal ball says "is any one there? Speak to me? Yes O master I hear you, i predict parking will not be free after 6pm anymore! The Gestapo will be seeking out all ye cinema goers to spoil your evening with a parking ticket! Wooo Wooo here this from the spirit of the long lost Angel Football Ground now buried under a scruffy old supermarket.

manofkent - if, as the council say, the spaces are to stay the same then where are they going to be located? Bradford Street and the high street side of Angel total 250 add to that the enlargement of sainsburys and the petrol station being located on what looks like the carpark where the monthly market is held and you are left with a significant reduction....

Brett this is Tonbridge and Saisbury's Borough Council. (Stuff West Malling, no one has been there anyway). In TSBC we do as we like, never mind about the hapless Poll Tax payers, we at the council have it all stitched up with back handlers! Don't rock the boat!
