Tonbridge and Sevenoaks Street(un)wise...
A new magazine just popped through my shop letter box. In fact the November and December issues both popped through at the same time. It's called Streetwise and, without wishing to be unkind, it just looks like a it's full of advertisements which are strung together with a load of nonsense editorial. I mean total nonsense; unfunny jokes and photos which have little or no value. It looks like a cynical way to tap the local advertising dollar. I do of course declare an interest in that I write a monthly page in The Tonbridge Insider but, really, that has nothing to do with my first impression of this rag. Surely content should count for something, a bit of relevant editorial here, a heart warming story about a local personality there. At least The Insider attempts to inform, educate and entertain a little doesn't it? Streetunwise could, and most probably does, have the same editorial (if you can call it that) in any other town. They are just repeating words to save costs and distribute it in as many unsuspecting towns as they can before they're found out. It has no relevance to Tonbridge or Seveenoaks at all. The magazine proclaims itself as "The Funny Little Local Mag." A pointless waste of paper is what I call it! It makes The News of the World look like Newsweek Magazine....

You are being totally unfair to this newcommer.
Your News of the World comparison is so wide of the mark.
Some people will like the funny stories in times when newspapers are full of gloom.
It cant be a surprise to you that most people like to hear and tell jokes. You must be very odd if you dont.
If you look at their web site you will see that StreetWise has been successfully launched in Crawley, Reigate, East Grinstead, Brighton and Dorking and in the same spaces of time the Insider has only reached parts of Tonbridge.
Looks like the Insider could be up against it unless it learns to live with it.
If it's even vaguely more interesting than A boards, it has my support..
You are quite wrong TB, to describe StreetWise as a waste of time.
Their sales people succesfully persuaded advertisers to pay good money for a 'two editions for the the price of one' pitch. The fact that both months were delivered together, and the publication is vitually devoid of readable content, just indicates that the 'magazine' is temporary, and is purely a vehicle to tranfer sucker's money across to the publisher's bank account.
That is NOT a waste of time TB. It is most profitable.
If you check out www.localstreetwise.co.uk you will see thats its hardly a temporary business set up to rip off customers. The last comment can not be justified.
I think I must be "odd" then because I didn't find the jokes funny at all. They are merely computer generated safe jokes thrown together to create this formulaeic rag in my humble opinion. Having a good sales force to sell the advertising in there does not a good magazine make. Long term, sustained quality content is the only way to keep people reading it and this just doesn't appear to have that. I'll give it six months!...
At least A Boards are a topical local issue. A pathetic joke about a pig's orgasm lasting up to 30 minutes isn't! (If you don't believe me see page 4 of the December issue headed "Useless Facts") Come, on face it, it's tawdry trash, a waste of ink!
Now I know why pigs always seem to be smiling..
