"Regeneration" of Tonbridge High Street....

Now that Tonbridge High Street is being ripped apart has anyone changed their views on the pavement widening/"regeneration" scheme. I just hope the results are worth all this turmoil. But what does everyone else think?? Did the town centre even need "regenerating?"

You should welcome pavement widening.
Just think if you put a couple of chairs outside we can
all read the books we had no intention of buying, in comfort.

Not sure whether the emergency services have been informed that there will be a 20mph speed limit through the high street and with reduced roads width you want be able to pull over to let the emergency services pass. I think cyclists in the High Street will generate tail backs as no on will be able to pass them.
With the crossing outside of W H Smiths being removed it looks like that area will be come a shared space for pedestrian just to wander across the road.
We saw it before when the small bridge was being repaired for a few weeks and one way working was in place that footfall in the High street was reduced. I wonder if KCC will be doing a survey of this ?
When the schools go back the traffic flow wlll be very interesting

I think mr books you will need to step up your internet/ebay sales or take a long holiday.

Faceless bureaucrats sitting in their ivory towers, thinking they know what’s best for us. Imposing their hare-brained schemes on us, whether we like it or not. Not caring about the inconvenience these schemes cause whilst being put into effect, and not caring what impact the finished scheme has on local shops and businesses, to say nothing of road users and pedestrians alike.

Nothing must be allowed to stand in the way of their grand schemes, until 10 years down the road, someone in authority finally decides the whole thing was a complete waste of time, and it’s all dug up and the misery and inconvenience starts all over again.

Guess the pavement widening is for the legions of the permanently feckless driving their mobility scooters around town. Probably need to build a multi-storey for them outside McSpoons. In better news, The Old Fire Station being brought back to life is probably the best thing to happen to Tonbridge in years. TW's Fuggles Beer Cafe popping up there means drinkable beer will be available in town for the first time since 1066. Hurray!

I agree with anonymous regarding mobility scooters. Why not give them their own clearly marked lane? Also a flyover, giving them direct access into Wetherspoons, so they wouldn't have to park up outside on benefit days.
Also Tonbridge NEEDS a proper fat lane running the length of the high street down both sides. What with the ever growing population (literally) of giant porkers in Tonbridge, some kind of separate lane, with crash barriers just for fat people would be a great idea! Money well spent.

Toll booths at each end of the fat lane would ensure a good return at the end of each financial year.

What next Tim? you will be tagging various sections of the community so that auto tolls can be used and the money taken at source.
So far the widening scheme seems to be stopping traffic from going to Sainburys/Beales/ Waitrose and Iceland from the South of the town and bus passengers from the North of the town can only get off at the back of the Angel centre or the railway station and thus give the upper High Street a miss. Business must be suffering, I have seen many cars from the south doing a right turn into Medway Warf but its banned turn, maybe a temporary safe right turn need to be put in.

And where will all the DIYers go when B&Q closes next year? Another block of flats to go up maybe?

There are so many anonymous' posting in here, I don't know which anonymous I'm replying to. All I was trying to say was, take advantage of this pavement widening scheme and paint in a piggie lane. You know what it's like...You want to get somewhere, and you're suddenly confronted with a family of fatties. Where do you go? You can't overtake them because the big fat mummy is twittering on her phone about the latest pie offers in the high street, they can veer in any direction. You usually end up stepping into the road to get past. It's either risk getting run over, or being crushed between big fat mummy and big fat daddy, even their fat kids can kill a small dog in an instant.
This is why Fat Lanes could work in Tonbridge. Toll booths could charge no more than the price of a pork pie, so it would be roughly the equivalent of me trying to park my car for an hour.

All this, and after three weeks the only thing that’s been achieved (apart from the chaos and loss to local businesses), is a giant brick flower pot in the middle of the roundabout outside Pound Stretcher. Now that’s what I call progress!

I agree Paul Bailey, it's a senseless waste of our money.
