Pawnography in Tonbridge....

Is it a sign of the times when the modern equivalent of the old pawn brokers arrives in town. Cash Converters have been steadily expanding on the back of the recession and inevitably, rather like the Black Death, they've arrived in our town. This shop used to be a designer menswear shop called Klan (remember) and the shop unit has been vacant for at least two years if not longer. I thought about opening my shop there but decided that the rent was far too high to justify it. Seems that there's far more money in pawn broking than there is in old books!...

Sign of the times maybe, but lets face it, Tonbridge isn't exactly a shopping metropolis is it? At least now, you might be able to buy something in town, rather than having to travel to Tunbridge Wells, and it'll be cheaper. Makes a change from charity shops...

Cash Converters are worst than charity shops. All they sell is secondhand goods that no one wants anymore and the bosses of the shops get richer,at least with charity shops they are doing some good.

Of course the bosses make money. It's a business.

I'm not trying to be clever. That shop has been empty for ages, and at least someone has taken it over. I don't suppose the rates are cheap either.
Also it's not selling just stuff that noone wants. There is some good stuff in there. Ok so it's basically a pawn shop, so in a way it makes money from people who've fallen on hard times, but then you could argue it also helps them out by providing some much needed cash in a hurry. Shops like Cash Converters have been around for centuries in one form or another...Ever since the first coins were minted I should think, so I don't know why people are talking about it like it's some new, evil entity that's recently risen up from the bowels of capitilism to devour the poor of Tonbridge.
