No Poetry at the Pub this week....

For all regulars of Poetry at the Pub, usually held on the first Thursday of the month at the Ivy House, there isn't one this Thursday. In fact there won't be one now probably until the Ivy House reopens. That, to paraphrase the famous explorer, Captain Oates, could be some time. The last time I looked in the window (about a week ago) there was no furniture in there and the plaster from the ceilings was half hanging off. Now I don't mind a seedy run down pub, but that would be taking it a bit far. Watch this space or Mr Books web site for updates....

The Ivy House, so ive been told, needs it's wiring sorting out and has some sort of structural fault and the rumour is that Enterprise Inns (bless 'em) are quibbling about fixing it.

If you want to know what's going on with the Ivy House it may be worth poping down to the Punch and Judy and speaking with the landlord there. He seems to have a good idea of what's going on with the Enterprise Inns owned pubs in Tonbridge.

I heard several years ago that the Ivy House was suffering from some sort of structural problem. Two former customers of mine were interested in taking on the lease at the time, but when they were told by the pub chain that they might have to foot the bill, they pulled out. What makes things more difficult is that the Ivy House is a listed building, so repairs of this sort can be rather expensive.

Having said that am looking forward to the day when the Ivy House finally re-opens.
