Spare a few pence for a huge newspaper group....

It seems that someone else is trying to muscle in on TonbridgeBlog's patch! I had a visit from a nice young lady called Karen, who tells me she is a free lance journo. She came armed with a bundle of promo cards for a web site called Tonbridge people, sub heading "Your Place. Your People." Sounds a bit puke-making to me but I'm sure she'll do her best. It seems that the site is a commercial one; that is to say it has to attract ads from local businesses in order to keep going. Take a look at it yourselves; it promises to "keep you in touch with local like minded people, read- and write! all the local news that's relevant to YOU, (I hate it when the do that in UPPER CASE don't you?) be first to know what's on locally etc etc etc etc...." the same old tawdry rubbish that all these local commercial sites churn out. And who's behind this great venture? Why Northcliffe newspapers, owners of the Courier and hundreds of other failing local rags of course. If they were so bothered about giving the good folk of Tonbridge a voice then why did they close down their offices on Tonbridge High Street at the first whiff of an economic downturn? They left the town without a newspaper office for the first time in over 100 years and their paper goes ever more Tunbridge Wells-centric every week but now we're being asked (very nicely mind) to help them out!

I've had a look, it looks fairly interesting although the website is rather busy. Seems to be scraping the barrel on the news though - there's a shed of the year competition!!!

sounds like you're a bit scared of the competition!! haha.. be interesting to see how this pans out...

No member of the public can still expect to find out the truth through the media, who are all brought and paid for to keep the sheeple, fast asleep to whats really going on

might be a step in the right direction

Anonymous is right, the media dish up a non-stop diet of trivia, scare stories and half-truths. I stopped reading newspapers years ago. They only exist to make money for their proprietors. I've said before that there's a lot to be said for the old adage of "never let the truth get in the way of a good story!" And taking things a stage further, "the only thing you can believe on the front of a newspaper is the date!"

awesome! i love u freaky conspiracy theorists!! the courier does a good job in general of covering whats going on in the town so its unfair to do it down too much tho!

Very true Paul lol!

I for one am glad that we seem to have a fair few wakey wakey's in Tonbridge, which appear to be increasing daily

For the run down on Carter/Gilroy & Co running Kent, this makes very interesting reading

Why are all the elected members so silent, could it be they all work in conjunction, as and when it suits them ?

Here are the top five earning Local Authorities in 2007 and how much money they made (GBP) by forced adoption. Essex County Council: 2,469,200.0 Kent County Council: 2,156,583.00 Manchester City Council: 984,877.00 Cheshire County Council: 685,134.00 Gloucestershire County Council: 612,209.00 So that's why kids are dis......appearing into the abusive UK forced adoption racket

Why is there a media blackout on the Hollie Greig downs syrome massive sexual abuse case from the age of 6, by a pedophile ring ; judge, social workers, teacher, nurses, solicitor etc

What will anyone do about this - NOTHING

It makes me sick that people turn into blind idiots and just tut tut and turn a blind eye to our country going down the pan and allow good men/women to be hunted down like dogs.

We have no 'good' media any more, its all drivel.

Anonymous said...

the reason why most "local rags" will not write about this kind of thing is that's its all complete rubbish perpetuated by conspirary theorists...

and for the last commenter who says nothing has been written about the Hollie Greig case - a simple google search of her name throws up stories by local papers on it -

Watch for yourself then decide if it is all complete rubbish, obviously some will always turn a blind eye to the truth, there's nothing anyone can do for those.

The conspiracy is against ordinary people and they need to wake up and realise what is happening.

The country is being driven by the third sector quango's, so if you are a councillor in a council ,you wont know what is going on anymore.

Why do you think Carter & co are on these quango's ?

We have a criminal elite in power, which create the problems in-order to be able to supply the solution; a police state enforcing more state control and extracting more information/control including money from the people in the street.

Our local media needsap to start getting their act together and educating the public.

So now I know which two subjects get everyone hot under the collar. Politics and Media. It took me nearly four years to work it out but got there in the end. TonbridgeBlog always was a bit of a slow starter!...

All anonymous's are the same person and that could include a couple of other names too.

I had a took too and I think it looks interesting too. Couldnot see the shed thing (LOL) but some interesting exclusives on Kelly Holmes. Looks like a breath of fresh air to me... instead of a lot of hot air! I like the fact anyone can write on it - I mean if you lot are all so paranoid about the media then surely this is the answer to your prayers...... or do you just like a good moan LOL

GaryGee said...

oh ye and the dig about the 'spare a few pence' - what is that all about? It's free to go on tonbridgepeople - I've just done it!!!!!! free I say, yes free! Free speech Hurah!!

Tonbridge blogger said...

No such thing as free Mr. Gary Gee! Not free for the advertisers? How long before the advertising becomes the main point of it all and starts effecting the editorial? What then for freedom of speech Gary Gee, eh what then? Contrast that with this blog written purely for the hell of it, for the good folk of Tonbridge with no advertising (oh except Google ads which are just there in the background and really nowt to do with me) and nothing to do with free adverts for Mr. Books Bookshop and the West Kent Book Fair.... PS. why is it that TonridgeBlog, which has been running, rather unthreateningly, for around 4 years has never, not once been mentioned in the Courier newspaper. In that time time this blog has been mentioned regularly on KMFM, on BBC Radio Kent and their website, featured on BBC Newsnight, in the Kent Messenger, in Tonridge Insider and in Kent Life magazine? Funny that!...

GaryGee said...

mmm you just sound jealous and grumpy - my jury is out, I am in favour of choice and change, giving people a voice instead of ramming one's blog down their throats and thinking you are some little God of Tonbridge! love your opportunistic streak though - MR BOOKS - there - a bit more advertising for yooo

Tonbridge blogger said...

Gary Gee: ouch that told me didn't it! In point of fact I'm actually quite big but not, I suppose, in God terms!! It's only ever one person's view (mine) just like your's is yours; I've never pretended it was anything other than that....

Anonymous said...

maybe the courier never features you because of all the cheap jibes you poke at them every so often??

what is your beef with the courier anyway??

Would be good to have some competition and a rival paper. How about a YourTonbridge weekly like other towns have? I'm sure it could work with all us commuters, it's a captive market.
