Bakehouse @ 124 opening tonight....

There's a new café and artisan bakery (what's one of them? Ed.) called, quite appropriately, The Bakehouse at 124, which is at 124 High Street, opening in Tonbridge tonight and I'm invited to the grand opening. You know how it is, me, the Mayor of Tonbridge, the new MP, Tom to his mates, and a few other select folk from the glitter and literati of the town. All of us tucking in to that lovely fluffy bread and hopefully necking one or two glasses of fizz. I don't want to sound ungrateful but I do hope that there are at least some tasty canapés being handed out as well. A man cannot live on bread and wine alone you know! Mind you they better get a move on as the new café still looked half finished when I looked in earlier this week. I think there will have been a flurry of activity this week to get it ready for tonight. It'll be a bit like one of those DIY programs where Handy Andy and his team work like crazy to some appropriately fast tempo music and put up the final shelf at exactly the moment the Mayor walks in!  Good luck to them because it's gonna be tough going in this big bad world of retail you're letting yourselves in for...

looks like its opening just in time!. I see that Greggs the bakers have stopped selling loaves in some of their shops. With supermarket in-store bakeries charging about £1.40 for a loaf what the price for an artesian loaf going to be?

I'll let you know after this evening. Hopefully half price to struggling fellow business folk!

Fantastic that something other than a charity shop is opening in Tonbridge (mind you, there is still a new charity shop opening). It's easy to mock but this can only be good for the High St, especially N of the big bridge. I wish them well and will certainly be stopping by this weekend.

Well if its supposed to be open it looks like it already needs a make over! Looks some time away from opening to me.

My understanding is that it will be opening properly on June 1st. AT the official opening last night we tried quite a few samples and I can tell you they were superb. Breads, patisserie (that's cakes and stuff) pastries, coffees, teas and other lovelies. I'm told that a loaf of hand made bread (and they really are tasty) will be around the £3 mark. Quite a bit cheaper than the Farmers Market stall but quite a lot more than Lidl bakery counter!

yes - good news indeed. Also, I'm sure I read that the old castle pub which was to be a wine bar is now going to be turned into another cafe/foodie type place? Good to have a number of independents starting up in town now....

I think I will stick to Wrights bread mixes at 90p a packet from leading supermarkets. You don't even need a bread machine although s food mixer helps.

So it looks like the Bakehouse is opening on Monday 8th. What with Olives Stores from the Hop Farm opening at the Castle Inn in due course, it looks like the leisure sector is taking over the High street. And why spend a fortune going abroad to get a tan when the new tanning shop is to open in the High Street. I Think with charges of up to £60 an hour you should get a bed or two installed in your book shop!

Early days I guess
. One coffee, one hot chocolate served in paper cups, yuk, plus one cheese scone, and only 15p change out of a tenner! Faint.

Outraged, you have to remember that there is 20% VAT to pay, so thanks to you thats another £1.80 towards keeping Osbourne's dream going.

Ahh well, at least it's £1.80 towards running the UK. Unlike the scum joints like Starbucks and others of their ilk, who serve crap coffee, charge VAT, and keep it, thus doing their best to contribute nothing to the country!
