Edwin Apps in Tonbridge....

I met Edwin Apps in Mr. Books yesterday. He of All Gas and Gaiters fame (I can just about vaguely remember Dereck Nimmo playing a vicar in the comedy series.) He has an exhibition of his art starting on Saturday at the Parish Church and all week in Church Lane and then a book signing on Sat. May 25th 2pm to 6pm at my shop. He seems like a lovely chap but I was struck by him not knowing what a 50p coin was. He had a perfectly spoken English accent which made you fully expect him to know our coinage. But you see Edwin has been an artist living in South West France for nearly 40 years and hardly ever comes over here. I really like the look of his paintings myself and will definitely be going to take a peek. Find out more HERE

I too just about remember Dereck Nimmo in "All Gas and Gaiters", but not Edwin Apps. I have to say I've never heard of him, and was wondering which part he played in the series?

Incidentally, Dereck Nimmo went on to star in another clerical series, called "Oh Brother", in which he played a monk. He was also a regular pannelist on Radio Four's "Just a Minute".

No you wouldn't have seen him in it PB. He wrote it. Apparently there are only afew surviving episodes as the BBC recorded over the master tapes! Can you Adam and Eve it?

It's no secret that Amazon, WH Smith and many others sell as loss leaders but were any of those copies signed? That is pretty much why Mr. Books wouldn't have stocked the book were it not for the author coming in to sign the book. The price you mention is well below small inde shops wholesale price I can assure you PB

Taping over "priceless" episodes of progammes was common practice at the BBC back in the 60's. Apparently, video tape was ultra-expensive back then, so the idea was to use it several times over. (Some bean-counting accountant probably came up with this penny pinching idea).

However, one would have thought it must have crossed someone's mind in that vvast organisaton that there would be people wanting to watch repeat episodes at sometime in the future. Early episodes of programmes like Steptoe & Son and the Likely Lads have been lost forever, alongside All Gas and Gaiters discussed earlier.
