Tonbridge Christmas Lights....
I'm amazed that the Tonbridge Christmas lights switch on went ahead last night in the appalling lashing rain and winds but, judging by the fireworks going off about 6-30pm just as I returned from exhibiting at the Dorking Book fair, I'm pretty sure it must have. Did anyone go along? Let's hear how it all went then and who was the celeb. I know that TonbridgeBlog usually has a better ear to the ground than this and that I should be telling you how it went, but I can't be everywhere at once you know!...

Hi Tonbridge Blogger and fellow citizens of this town of ours!! I went along and managed to last the distance. We did have a bit of rain and wind, but that didn't stop the show. KMFM were on hand to 'host' the event along with the mayor (whose name passes me by - slap wrist). The latter switched on the lights, bit of delay and much laughter as it took 10 seconds before the tree illuminated (how does it manage to stay up with the wind?!) and then a bit longer for the remainder of the high street. Anyway we were then told by DJ Neil Faraday that the 'entertainment' to fill the gap hadn't turned up due to the wind and rain, so they had to find an alternative. They managed to drive to the station car park and get a group of brazilian/cuban style musicians to entertain us on stage whilst the parade was sorted out. This then started with much excitement in the wind and rain. After that passed the high street filled up (and me with the free boxes of Waitrose mince pies - yum!)and we waited a further 30 mins or so before the one and only Ray Meager, yes Ray Meager, who is that i hear you ask? It's only Alf Stewart from Home and Away!! Well what else would Alf want to do at 6pm on a wet and windy Sunday apart from be in Tonbridge? Anyway Alf, sorry Ray, and the mayor came on and filled in for a few mins before the fireworks started. Was good fun even in the rain and wind. Well done to all involved! Maybe next year it might be better to not space things out so much and condense it a little? Just a thought.
Not quite my impression of it; my son and I arrived in the High Street just after 5pm to find the lights already switched on! There then followed the usual half-hearted attempt at a carnival procession, which given the appalling weather was probably as much as one could expect.
We then all waited a good half hour in the wind and rain for the fireworks to begin. The display was excellent, but why the long wait?
Missed the free Waitrose mince pies (shame) and fortunately the Aussie soap star,(never heard of him, but what he must have thought of a damp and dreary Tonbridge when he could have been back hone in sunny Oz, is anyones guess?).
Glad we made the effort to attend though, but next year let's skip the parade (how many troupes of Twirlers are there in the town for heaven's sake?), and let's not space the proceedings out quite so much either!
It's true - there was a really long wait for the fireworks to start which was horrible in the wind and rain. They were very good though, and must cost a packet.
There were about 4 groups of twirlers and not a smile between the lot of them!
The mince pies were great, good old Waitrose :-)
Wish I'd known about the free mince pies from Waitrose - were they well advertised? as I didn't see them!
Paul - they had loads of them! By the end, they were coming round asking if people wanted to make a donation in return for a whole box to take home. The were mainly around the big bridge - remember to stand there next year!!
