Architectural talk tonight anyone?...
Don't forget that there's a talk on Architecture in the Weald of Kent and Sussex hosted by the Tonbridge Civic Society this evening at the Angel Centre. They have some very good and, admittedly one or two mediocre, speakers at their talks; this time it's the turn of Stephen Langer, who's an architect so ought to know what he's on about. This is the last proper talk of the society's season so let's hope it's a good one. Next month the Design Awards will take place at Somerhill House, which is always a lovely evening with some rather nice grub and then it's the AGM and summer event. So if you want a feel of how the society operates then get yourself along tonight. Non members are welcome, although these days there's a charge of £2 (I think) so you may as well join for the whole year which only costs £7. See you there for a 7-30 for 8pm start, or maybe not....

I will not be able to make it tonight, but I would be interested to know if they talk about the new WKC building and those attrocious blocks of colour. I bet there will be a few accidents in Brook Street as a result of people suddenly feeling ill when they see them!
Maybe not, seeing as you didn't give us much notice. Some of us lead very busy lives, don't you know and can't just go flitting off to Civic Society talks at the drop of a hat!
Tomahawk Kid: I did go along last night and no the WKC building didn't come up but it has on other occasions. I saw the plans for this some time ago but haven't seen it recently. What's wrong with a bit of modern design? Apparently their theatre in the new building is going to be quite something, including an open air section. What's more it will be open for use by the general public in the same way that the EM. Forster at Tonbridge School is....
PB: you should go along to the odd meeting, you might be surprised how interesting some of the talks are. You are probably just the sort of thinking man they need on the committee!
I am not meaning to be negative about the WKC building. I am sure the structural design is probably great. I also have no problem with modern architecture - I actually quite like it - but those blocks of colour just don't do it for me. I have spoken to lots of people (including some who work at WKC) about this and have yet to find anyone who likes the colours. Modern architecture is more than sticking a few random blocks of colour on a building!
After reading your later post on the Civic Society meeting in question TB, I'm glad I didn't go to that particular event.
I will take a look at their website though, assuming they have one!
