That's the wonder of good old...Poundstretcher!...

Some of you have commented that TonbridgeBlog hasn't mentioned the stirrings at the old Woolworth shop on Tonbridge High Street. Yes I have noticed the arrival of some stock in there. It looks like an extension of Poundstretcher from near the Rway station. I'd guess that they are moving, if temporarily, to take advantage of th bigger premises and slightly better location. It never ceases to amaze me just how many people need cheap plastic storage boxes though! It's probably not the sort of shop that many in Tonbridge would like to see, but we're far from being the only High Street that this is happening to. The reality is that, for the time being at least, value for money is what sells....

IT REALLY IS SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT! I am beginning to hate Tonbridge. YUK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does that also mean 100's of immigrants living in the space above. It's a big space. OMG

yes it probably does there is loads of immigrants living in tonbridge. they take all the decent shops!

Did you see the boat that had a big "Daily Telegraph" logo on it - but the boat was made out of pages from The Guardian?

I chortled at that...

You may be interested in Ivy House has celebrity chef John B Race connection. Tonbridge cant be so bad then!

Here we go with the celebrity thing - I am personally sick and tired of anything celebrity. I am completely celebritied out (is there such a word). So what - it just means higher prices and he sn't going to do the cooking is he - maybe he'll just plan the menus and then the owners will plan the prices. So much for celebrity. WKC has a lovely little restuarant - cheap and cheerful and run and cooked by the students. Brilliant check it out. You can keep your celebrities. Who cares.

Yes walked by this lunchtime and wondered what all that 'cut and paste' was about. They have a Guardian, Daily Mail and Telegraph boat. Very odd - very strange and very unwelcome.

Let's hope the top floor of Woolies is full of immigrants, that way there's a chance the limited gene pool contained within Tonbridge will receive a much welcomed boost.
Just go into Sainsbury's and witness yer typical Tonbridgian - the thick, bewildered, stupid and ignorant waddling about spending their benefits on crisps and pop.

What else? Oh Yes, the new Quarry Hill chippie - worse chips I've ever had (they use some special two year old frying oil or something?(Imagine what the fish is like?)- Give it 2 months. Tops.

Here's an idea. Why don't we all try making some POSITIVE comments. Go on just try it for one day! It's really quite easy if you try....

Yes that new chip shop in Quarry Hill is crap. How many takeaways have been operating there for the past 2 years. It was a cafe for a few years, then became Dolphin Fish Bar that shut down after a year because of bad hygiene, then they called it USA chicken and pizza that didnt last long did it and that because of bad hygiene!.
I think it will last a few more months then they will get shut down for poor hygiene again, then what will go there another kebab shop. If you want decent fish and chips go to Avebury Avenue Fish and Chip Shop trust me there food is top quality!.

oh and Tonbridge Blogger stop moaning!

I thought it was alright to moan about people moaning! Yes I would agree with you on the Avebury Fish and chip shop. I've lived in Tonbridge or around twenty years now and I'm pretty sure that the same people have run it in all that time. They're always cheerful and more imposrtantly the food is freshly prepared right there in front of you. That reminds me of an old joke: A young fellow walks in to a fish & chip shop and says give us fish and chips and lots of salt n vinegar now, make it snappy! The fish fryer says I'm sorry young man but that's no way to talk in this shop. Now let me come round that side of the counter and I'll show you how to to ask for fish and chips. So he does and says: Now then young man I'd like a portion of your finest fish and chips with lashing of salt and vinegar please. The young fellow says to the fish fryer: F' off you wouldn't serve me!

Something positive:

1) Thought the 'boats' outside were fun). At least it was handmade as opposed to some boring mass-produced facia or a poster with 'the cheesy white 2.5 model family (and dog on)(or soap 'celeb').

He used old newspapers too. In the recession we should focus on cheaper and creative ways to market businesses. It worked as it attracted your attention. And now it is being 'discussed'.. good or bad.

Personal expression should be encouraged not suppressed in Tonbridge. I think West Kent Art students etc ought to be set loose in the High Street, they could jazz the place up and bring some refreshing (and young) life to the place. Make talking pieces. Even Masterpieces.

Elsewhere shops (London/Cranbrook) use local photography and paintings in their front windows. People love it. It gets in the paper, and bring out the Mayor. In London you even get hairdressers which are also art galleries.Sometimes they are tourist attractions. One shop in Sevenoaks even had a Dalek.

The more artists.. sorry 'oddballs' the better. Some of the best artists were 'oddballs'. They have to begin somewhere. Either this, or people just walk past the shop all the time. These days a shop as to stand out.

2) Re Immigrants. Do we really want to have some kind of Tonbridge 'apartheid checkpoint' in the High Street for 'immigrants' and artists? And what about the chavs as well, and people who wear blue and green together, wear orange, have long hear, wear moustaches, have beards, wear braces etc. Maybe we can only let in accountants and people who have been born in Tonbridge prior to 1920? Could Tonbridge the new New LA with all these 'perfect clones'?
A Tonbridge 'Utopia'?

How long does it take them immigrants to set up a shop for crying out loud they have been working on it for weeks now. I think it just looks shit. I also saw some muslims looking at the former Railway Bell pub the other day as well, wonder if the rumor that was posted on here a few months ago was true is it going to be a mousqe!

Time to call a halt to any more comments on this post, surely?

PetrolStation village: Oh don't give up on us! Surely part of the point of a blog is that not everyone agrees with you and some people will be light hearted while others serious. That reflects the way we, as people, are after all doesn't it? There have been a few bigotted comments of late I'll grant you; but I'm not into censorship unless they really do go way over the mark. I'd rather let the more sensible members of TBlog's audience see what everyone is saying and comment on some of those more extreme views if they see fit. In short: let freedom of speech reign....

I went into the new poudshop today and it is really shit in there, they dont even take cards in there how shit is that.

The shop sucks, there really is nothing good about it it doesn't even have a f'ing name for F's sake and half the stuff in there should be sold for 10p not a quid. what i wanted was a HMV or a Game cos the only shops like that in Tonbrigde is Game 4 less and thats ovrpriced and second hand, i'd give it 3months to go out of busness.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Anonymous June 20th 2009 3:22 PM it is really shit in that shop. I would have liked a HMV or a better shop like primark to go in there, there is enough cheap shops in this town. I think after a few weeks they will loose customers!
