Another woolley council idea!...

Take a look at the picture above. That's right there's nothing much there other than a pavement and a bench, a bin and a couple of street lamps, some bollards and a sign telling us where the parish church is (even though you can see it very clearly from there!) Oh and some bike racks. Crucially though there are no hideously ugly wooden containers with trees in them. Well when I say trees what I really mean is a skinny whips, starved of moisture, wrecked by vandals and surrounded by thick weeds (See top picture.) Another crazy council idea which probably sounded like a good idea in a distant committee meeting. So I won't be missing them one bit. What to put in their place? I know that the idea is being mooted of a larger tree in their place to fill the empty pavement space. What kind of tree? Who knows but they do put a Christmas tree there every year anyway so why not plant a pine or a nice spruce and decorate that every year. Or then again what's wrong with an open area of pavement? It could be used for a bit of busking or maybe street theatre. Why not leave it as a usable space? At the Civic Society talk the other day, during the announcements before the actual talk, this came up and I said, in all seriousness, that we should think about putting a statue there. No, not of me that can keep for another time! No, I was thinking of maybe Tonbridge's cricketing hero, Frank Woolley; what a fitting tribute to the man a large bronze statue would be. Bat in hand about to do one of his trade mark off drives. (Actually I made that bit up but you get the idea!) But, knowing the council they'll probably just dump another ugly tree there and have done with it for a few more years....

I am sure they will find a nice masonic symbol to fill in the gaps, such as another Cleopatra's needle, as can be seen outside many courts.

Or some other scary sculpture to spend tax payers money on.

Leaving it a free space does sound a good option and maybe it could be used to hand out the latest copy of http://www.ukcolumn.org/

Sort of like a speakers corner for the people of this once great country, if we are still allowed free speech that is?

What about a sign "Welcome to Tonbridge Town" or "You are Welcomed to Tonbridge Town"

What about free advertising for all the brave people who are trying to wake up the sheeple who have their heads buried deeply in either the controlled propaganda Tv /snooze papers .

Imagine what could happen if they had a giant video playing this instead

To cheer us all with all the 'changes' that are happening, we could hold a staged talent show come comedy drop-in once a week, may be even award a best prize for the best impersonator

You know the sort of thing

"clowns to the left of me, bankers to the right, here I am left in the middle with you....."

What about a writers' corner! Staues of Frederick Forsythe, Jane Austen, Clemence Dane, EM Forster that sort of thing. Just a thought, might work.

Those weeds were a disgrace, what the heck do we pay our council taxes for? In their place should be a nice mature tree.

talking of weeds...this is absolutely shocking may be we should have a name and shame board in place instead

Greg Lance-Watkins... The man who duped Robert Green!

Greg Lance-Watkins' role in attempting to scupper the quest for justice for Hollie Greig is absolutely Pivotal. This deeply disturbing case has been spreading like wildfire through various viral means. It has shocked and disturbed many media professionals. Yet it seems some people are hell bent on keeping the very mention of the name Hollie Greig 'off the air'. We ask WHY and reveal the truth about the man behind those efforts... Greg Lance-Watkins; serial deceiver!

Presumably there were once some buildings occupying this piece of waste-ground near your shop, TB?

It's not really the most appropriate place for a statue of Frank Woolley, or anyone else for that matter.

And what's with all these anonymously posted conspiracy theories? Surely I can't be the only person prepared to post comments under my own name. Are the good people of Tonbridge that scared of Big Brother that they're afraid to reveal their true identities?

I am with you Paul, I couldn't understand where all these wierd anonymous conspiracy postings were coming from either. Then I looked at the date. Today is when the (brain?) dead rise up isn't it?

Why not appropriate for Woolley statue? I thought he grew up right in the town centre and it would be facing the parish church. Perhaps Angel car park would be more appropriate since that used to be the cricket pitch where he scored all those runs on but I can't help feeling it would look out of place there these days. So where else would we put it?

Somewhere near the Angel Centre would be more appropriate for a statue of Frank Wooley. For a start more people would see it there, and as you rightly point out TB, the old Angel Cricket Ground was where he scored many of his runs.

More to the point TB, who is going to pay for such a statue? Not hard-pressed council tax payers I hope?

How about Frank Woolley bowling at one end of Tonbridge High Street to Colin Cowdrey batting at the other!!

Tonbridge blogger said...

As for payment that's simple we'll have a whip round or raid the national lottery fund.

After all who paid for those weird statues in the middle of the roundabouts on the way to Kings Hill (near the borough council offices!)There seems to be a surplus of them out there but none in Tonbridge itself. Funny that!

An excellent idea and a long overdue to one of Tonbridge's great men
