More rubbish talk from TMBC....
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council have put up posters around the town stating that they are going to clamp down on litter louts (my words not theirs) Heavy fines will be the order of the day with a zero tolerance-type approach. I'll try to post a pic of the poster soon but maybe some of you have noticed them already. Is this the way forward or is there a wider social issue that needs addressing? Certainly I get really pissed off with the amount of crap that accumulates on a Friday night on the Bank Street/High Street corner where, judging by the cartons, late night kebab eaters gather. Nothing wrong in that, it's their stomach linings being attacked not mine, but why throw the wrappers down on the pavement, spilling the half eaten contents out for the rats to finish off, when there's a bin about five feet away? It is a question of attitude half the time, it's certainly not a lack of available bins, so maybe a rocket up the arse in the way of a fifty quid on the spot fine could be the answer....

Maybe they should be fined for sending us Junk Mail
The kebab and takeaway shops should take more responsibility too and sweep up outside their property, use biogradeable products or people ought to be encouraged to bring their own tupperware perhaps, they're less likely to chuck it way. The containers on sale could be extra say a £1 (then people wouldn't buy them but bring their own). The council just like to blame it on the customers but both are to blame. Why don't these community service people clear this up too?
The sooner the better!!! However, is this going to bread another line of little Hitlers who jump out from closed doors and hiding places waiting for easy targets, such as little children dropping crisps or crumbs.
On the continent many fast food retailers have edible food trays a little like an ice cream cone but more savoury. Yum!!!!
Rather than just hand out heavy fines, would it not be more appropriate to have those who drop litter have to perform a community service? For example: collecting refuse alongside the A21 or from the sheltered area opposite the Police Station? I think that adds more value back into the community and will perhaps give offenders more time to consider their behaviour.
I know it's tough to enforce and costly to execute but I do wonder if it's that kind of punishment that will lead to much needed changes in attitude?
Perhaps surprisingly no one's mentioned bringing back the stocks and the whipping post yet. Are TonbridgeBlog readers all lefties or something?!..
