On Smoking by an Ex-Smoker....

Only ten weeks to go before the total ban of smoking in public places, except of course in that most public of all places, the street. Restaurants all over Tonbridge, Kent and the rest of England will join the other UK countries by, finally, introducing the ban. What will be the effect of this. Probably defiance from some tough guys, who will no doubt dig their heels in and smoke 40 a day instead of their usual 20 pack of cancer sticks. Tonbridge blog suspects that most will just carry on, except they'll smoke in the street, huddled outside pubs and restaurants in the newly created smokers cliques; in the summer it won't be an issue because they'll all sit outside wherever they can. But what about their freedom of choice? I hear the cry. That is a point; what about their freedom of choice to make our hair and clothes stink for days, their freedom to give the rest of us a higher risk of getting throat and lung cancer. Yeah what about that! It's hard to believe tha in these days of far more limited advertising, bans in offices already in force and the general out casting of smokers which has been going on for the last 15 years at least, that smoking seems to be as popular today as it was in Walter Raleigh's day. Maybe it's time to ban it in the streets and parks as well. Stink out your own homes if you are that determined, but leave the rest of us with clean air thanks very much....

PS. There could be a gap in the market for a chain of smokers dens, where hardened nicotine addicts can go to just lay down and smoke themslves into a mellow haze; bit like the old opium dens!
