Painting in the Angel Centre....

If you haven't seen it already you must, no you really must, take a minute or three to admire the magnificent painting by Mike Insley which was commissioned by the Tonbridge Civic Society and recently given to the Angel Centre to hang in the inner lobby. It is actually more or less copied from a photo which still hangs in the upstairs bar of the centre. As you can see above it depicts a scene of much more genteel days; you can seen the curious mixture of the new horseless variety with more traditional carriages. The people in Edwardian dress (not that surprising because it was in 1906) socialising, marquees line the boundary, children playing. You have to see the original to really appreciate the detail which the artist has portrayed. The most amazing thing about this painting is that this beautiful setting is now the Sainsbury's car park and the Angel centre. Now there's progress for you....
