This was originally intended as a reply to a comment on Shopping Centre by hildenboroughblog (see article below) but Tonbridge blog thought that it was good enough for a posting...
There could be room for a shopping centre, along the lines of Victoria Place in Tunbridge Wells, around the Angel area and smaller boutique type shops in the older part of town to the North of the Big Bridge. T Wells is similar with Camden Road and the High Street for smaller shops and Vic Place for the chain stores. It could work you know, it's only like it is now because it needs a kick start. Personally I believe that the process is already in motion since Waitrose and Monsoon came to the town. The rest will take time, but there are some good signs with the likes of Silvermans Jewellers, Cycle ops, Jessops, Kent Lighting, Antonia's restaurant, Bionic Records, WH Smith Stationers and others. Shoppers in the town could help out by shopping in Tonbridge whenever they can instead of buying on the internet so much, or going for the cushy option of the indoor shopping centre. Once it establishes momentum, a reputation will follow, then it's an upward spiral. This all takes time, but we will get there. There's optimism for you!...
