Downtown Tonbridge PD....

If you were someone who had fallen asleep in the 1970s and suddenly awoke blindfolded in Tonbridge High Street today you might be forgiven for thinking that you were in Harlem, New York. Is it me or has there been a creeping increase over the last thirty odd years in the use of yank-style emergency sirens. I know the noise they emit has evolved, but I'm talking about the massively increased over use of them. Every ten minutes or so there's a police car or ambulance rushing off to another violent scene of battling street gangs, or a fire engine whirring its way to another towering inferno. Call me old fashioned but was there anything actually wrong with the nee nor, nee nor, sound or, for that matter the simple bell of the fifties and sixties. I know of at least one retired couple who are moving away from the area mainly due to this unceasing nuissance. The new sound might make the coppers and paramedics feel like they're on the set of ER or something but, to the vast majority, these sirens have become the ultimate in annoying noise pollution....
