An Inconvenient Truth, A Global Warning....
This documentary film by nearly President of the USA, Al Gore, is an absolute must watch for anyone who is remotely interested in the future of the planet we all share. In essence it is a lecture and presentation interspersed with film clips and cartoon asides which help keep up the interest level. It is thought provoking, witty, non-sensationalist and yet gripping due to the enormity of the crisis we all face. He points out that this is not something off in the distant future, Global Warming is happening right now and is set to effect us all very dramatically with the next 50 to 70 years unless we act now. That is possibly within my lifetime and certainly within my children's. So it bothers me very much. He compares the scepticism with that which the anti smoking lobby faced 30 or 40 years ago, when their arguments were dismissed as having no conclusive proof. Look what has happened to smokers and the cigarette industry nowadays; they are increasingly becoming the outcasts of society. The evidence for global warming being a serious problem for the world is overwhelming and yet the few dissenters to this view, usually those with a vested interest, are often the ones which most people listen to. Why? Because it is more convenient to do nothing than to do something. More convenient to drive to work than cycle, walk or catch a bus; more convenient to leave the TV on standby and the lights switched on around the house. It's nicer to have a big car, aircon and a plasma screen TV. Scientists who have pointed out this inconvenient truth, have in the past, in America at least, been shunned, sacked and unable to find employment because they had the balls to speak out. Watch this film and it will probably make you think harder about the subject. You may even do something about your own habits, even if it is inconvenient....
